Google Chrome just got a huge update that will change the way you search
The days of countless tabs open may be behind us with Chrome’s new side panel search feature. In a recent blog postGoogle introduced a search update that could have a big impact on everyday use, along with a few other handy new features.
Having a secondary search window on the same screen is especially convenient for professionals and students. For example, academic research and references can be compared and cross-checked, while those relying on work research can check facts on the fly. Likewise, it will now be even easier to switch between different online stores to find the best deal.
How to use the new Chrome side panel
To use the side panel feature, Chrome internet users must first search the web as usual, then after selecting a result, click on the “G” logo in the search bar. This will open a second instance of Google in the sidebar, opening to the term you previously searched for.
Selecting a search result from the side panel will replace your main window with the new website. This could significantly reduce site-hopping pain. Google itself describes this feature as “a productivity booster that opens a sidebar containing your search results. This would make it quicker and easier to jump between results.
Using the side panel is like looking through a library shelf: you can open a book, see that it’s not what you need, then put it back and pick up another. In Chrome, the same applies, and you don’t have to worry about clicking on a website and wasting time.
One task this feature could be particularly useful for is for online shopping. It is easy to quickly compare prices and offers from different suppliers.
Google Chrome price tracker feature
Google Chrome has also added a new “Follow Price” feature, which will send you emails when the price of a chosen product changes. It comes just in time to Black Friday Deals season.
Here’s how it works.
Just like the side panel, this feature is in your search bar. When viewing a product online, simply click the bell icon and you will receive email notifications when the price for that product changes. Selecting the same product from multiple retailers can be a great way to ensure you’re getting the best deal available at all times.
Google Chrome pin a tab
When you’re working with lots of tabs open, it’s easy to lose track of what you really need to access. Chrome now has a pinned tabs feature, which means you can make sure important tabs stay at the top of the queue.
To pin a tab, simply right-click on it and select “Pin”. If you need more space for a large tab, you can always right-click it again and select “Move tab to another window”.
