Aadhaar-PAN Linking Last Date March 31, 2022: Linking the two is mandatory for filing income tax returns

The government has extended the deadline for linking the permanent account number (PAN) to the Aadhaar card by six months, with the new deadline now being March 31, 2022. The Central Commission for Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced that the extension of the deadline for linking the two identity cards is done to relieve taxpayers and resolve the difficulties encountered in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that citizens can now link the two cards by the end of the current fiscal year.

This is the fourth time the government has extended the deadline for linking the two pieces of ID. Initially, the last date was set for March 31, 2021, which was extended to June 30, and then to September 30. Now the deadline is again extended by six months – until the end of the current fiscal year.

If the PAN card is not linked to the Aadhaar card, it may become inoperative and may incur a late fee of Rs 1,000. In addition, financial transactions may not be able to be carried out when it is mandatory to provide the details of the PAN card.

Unique Identity Number – Aadhaar is a 12 digit number issued by the issuing body of Aadhaar – Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), while PAN is a 10 digit alphanumeric number assigned by the Tax Service on Income. The PAN card is essential for performing multiple financial transactions where the PAN quote is required. Linking PAN and Aadhaar card is mandatory to perform income tax related activities such as filing income tax returns (ITR).

Linking the two identification documents is a straightforward process as the income tax service allows taxpayers to link the two unique identification numbers on its official website. The two documents can also be linked by texting 567678 or 56161. This can also be done manually by filling out a form at a designated PAN service center.
